F1 through the eyes of a speed freak!

South Africa still hopeful

It’s been years since we saw an F1 race at Kyalami in South Africa, and it looks like there are some that want it to return to the land of Springboks.

I grew up in South Africa and used to love going out to Kyalami to watch the test sessions when the teams all went there to test. The races we went to were great too before F1 stopped coming in 1993.

It seems that the A1 GP that happened in Durban went down well, and David Gant (head of the South African GP Corporation) says that they are trying to organise a race for the F1 teams in Cape Town. It seems that there are some hold ups to the plan, as the government of SA and other groups own the land where the track is looking to be built. It seems most of the issues are around getting hold of that.

Gant said that if that is all solved, then they will be applying for a license this year, so who knows the cars could go back to SA by 2010.

I hope so, it would be a great excuse for me to take a trip back to SA, and hey, any sports are better under a nice hot sun.

If the RSA had another race, I for one would fly back to the country to watch it.
