Kimi get’s 2 in a row
Lewis Hamilton could not manage to convert his Pole position into a win today. Kimi Raikkonen however did show that the Ferrari was at least half a second quicker than the two McLaren’s in race conditions.
Lewis blocked Kimi into the first corner, and then lead the field into his first stop, however Kimi pressured Lewis all the way.
The Ferrari had two laps more fuel than the Lewis McLaren, and made that count while Lewis was pitting (where he made his first race mistake, when he preempted the lollypop man. Well done to the fuel rig guy, keeping the fuel flowing eve with the car moving), coming out in the lead after his stop.
The surprise however was that Fernando Alonso stayed out longer than either of the two cars in front of him, and in the second stint he ran in first, however he only took on a short load of fuel in his stop.
Massa however having started from the pit lane after stalling the car on the formation lap, was carving through the field, and had managed to get himself into the top eight.
It seemed however that Lewis could not match the pace of either his team mate, or the flying Ferrari of Kimi, and after the first stop seemed to settle for third place, Ron Dennis alluding to this fact by saying they turned the engine down quite early on in the race.
Robert Kubica and Felipe Massa had a great tussle towards the end of the race, with Robert showing his grit, holding on to take fourth spot, even though the Ferrari was certainly quicker.
Felipe Massa (my racer of the day), passed many people on the track to take the fifth spot, after a great mature drive.
Nick Heidfeld finished in sixth spot, with a day that he seemed to struggle to match the pace of his younger team mate.
The last two points spots go to the Renault team, with the younger Heikki Kovalainen getting the better of Giancarlo Fisichella.
The two Honda’s looked a little better today as well, both drivers running a one stop strategy, and managing to finish in ninth and tenth (Rubens Barrichello followed by Jenson Button).
So a good British Grand Prix, Lewis is still leading the championship, and has started nine GP races, and finished on the podium in all of them. The Ferrari boys are coming on strong though, and McLaren are hoping the testing that they are doing next week will bring the performance of the car back above the Ferrari cars.
